About William

William (Bill) is known as a highly practical, creative and fearless barrister who brings  wide experience to his work as an advocate, negotiator and draftsman in the following areas of specialism:

Bill specialises in all aspects of Immigration, Nationality and Asylum Law.
He regularly appears on behalf of Appellants in the First-Tier Tribunal, IAC at its various hearing centres all over England and Wales as well as before the Upper Tribunal, IAC. He often appears too in Judicial Review cases whether in the High Court or in the Upper Tribunal, IAC, as well as before the Court of Appeal.

He has a varied clientele, including international sportsmen and sportswomen as well as cases involving the protection of children, homosexuals and the vulnerable, regularly representing clients from countries globally ranging from eg Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Iraq, The Gambia, Algeria and China.


Bill’s particularly expertise is in the Higher Education sector, having extensive experience of conducting legal research, delivering practical training, and of university teaching as a Lecturer (Cardiff and Durham Universities), as a Fellow
(Oxford and London Universities – Queen Mary and the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies), and as Professor of Law (Iowa, USA, London Guildhall, Bournemouth, Brunel, Greenwich, and Hertfordshire Universities).


Bill appears on behalf of clients in the Employment Tribunals all over the country,as well as before the EAT. He is particularly interested in cases involving discrimination of all kinds and was formerly an independent expert to the European Commission in Brussels particularly on redundancy and anti- discrimination law.


Bill has had experience in Sports Law at the Bar since the late 1990s.
Clients have included professional sportsmen and women (including internationals), particularly in football, rugby and golf, in a wide variety of areas including employment, corporate and disciplinary matters (including anti-doping).
He has also been a member of the Sports Dispute Resolution Panel (SDRP); was a panel member of a 3-person Panel and the Panel Chairman for the FA in disciplinary matters and is an ACAS Arbitrator in sports disputes.


Bill has expertise in Corporate Governance and is especially interested in matters involving directors’ duties and shareholders’ rights.

He is accredited to accept work on a Public Access basis.


Bill has had experience of working in senior positions in several large international law firms headquartered in the City of London.

He has also published extensively in his areas of legal expertise. He was the Founding Director of the first LPC before serving as the Head of a University Law School and was also founding editor of ‘The Journal of ADR, Mediation & Negotiation’.

Bill has served as a member of the Judiciary part-time including as an Immigration Judge for 6 years and in the Social Security sphere for 3 years.

Bill lives in London and is happy to travel, enjoying a national practice. He is interested in all sports, particularly Welsh rugby.
